In debates about UFOs and unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), one of the most common mistakes is to treat an unresolved case as evidence for alien visitation. Yet “unresolved” and “extraterrestrial” are not equivalent conclusions.

Introduction
This matters in a culture shaped by UFO stories, including the imaginative alien-contact narratives associated with Steven Spielberg’s films. Scientific investigation follows a different logic. Uncertainty is not proof. A mystery remains a mystery until evidence positively identifies its cause.
What Unidentified Actually Means
The word “unidentified” describes the status of an investigation, not the nature of the object or event being investigated. A case may remain open because the available evidence is incomplete, contradictory or too limited to support a firm conclusion. This distinction is crucial because people often interpret an official statement that something is “unidentified” as if it were an endorsement of extraordinary explanations. In practice, investigators use the term for events that cannot yet be confidently classified.
Consider a simple analogy. If a blurry photograph shows an indistinct object on the horizon, investigators may be unable to determine whether it was a drone, balloon, aircraft, bird or something else. The correct conclusion is not “therefore alien spacecraft”. The correct conclusion is “insufficient information for identification”.

Why Missing Data Keeps Cases Open
Many unresolved UAP reports remain unresolved for mundane investigative reasons rather than because they exhibit impossible characteristics.
Incomplete observations
A large proportion of sightings involve only a brief visual encounter, a single sensor recording or a limited set of observations. Without multiple independent measurements, investigators cannot reliably estimate distance, speed, size or motion.
For example, a bright light seen against a dark sky may appear to accelerate dramatically even when it is moving slowly. Without range information, apparent motion can be misleading. Scientific analysis depends on measurements, not impressions.

Sensor limitations
Modern discussions frequently assume that radar, infrared cameras and military sensors automatically provide definitive answers. In reality, every sensor has limitations.
Investigators must account for:
- Sensor calibration errors
- Optical distortions
- Atmospheric effects
- Tracking artefacts
- Data compression
- Incomplete metadata
- Software processing errors

Missing contextual information
An event that appears mysterious in isolation may become straightforward once additional information emerges.

- Military activity records
- Drone operation logs
- Additional witness accounts
When such information is unavailable, investigators may leave a case unresolved rather than force a weak conclusion. An unresolved classification can therefore reflect caution rather than mystery.
Why “We Don’t Know” Is Not Evidence for Aliens
The logical error at the centre of many alien-visitation arguments is known as an argument from ignorance: claiming that because a conventional explanation has not been established, an extraordinary explanation becomes likely.
Scientific reasoning does not work that way.
To establish that something is extraterrestrial, investigators must produce positive evidence supporting that conclusion. Simply lacking another explanation is insufficient. There are countless possibilities between “identified” and “alien spacecraft”, including rare atmospheric phenomena, classified technologies, sensor artefacts, observational errors and entirely unknown but natural processes.
This is why official agencies consistently separate the question of whether a report is unexplained from the question of whether it indicates extraterrestrial technology. The distinction may sound subtle, but it is fundamental. A mystery is not itself a discovery.
Unresolved Cases Can Still Be Valuable
Rejecting alien conclusions does not mean unresolved reports are unimportant.
Some unresolved cases are scientifically interesting precisely because they reveal gaps in observation systems. They can highlight:
- Weaknesses in sensor coverage
- Problems with data sharing
- Aviation safety concerns
- Limitations in tracking technologies
- Rare atmospheric or physical phenomena

What Positive Alien Evidence Would Require
If an unresolved report does not prove aliens, what would?
A persuasive extraterrestrial case would require affirmative evidence rather than mere absence of explanation.
Potential examples could include:
- Repeated observations across multiple independent sensor systems
- High-quality measurements allowing precise calculations of performance
- Physical material demonstrably inconsistent with known terrestrial origins
- Independent replication of findings by multiple investigators
- Open scientific scrutiny and peer review
- Evidence that survives attempts at conventional explanation
In other words, the evidentiary burden would be extremely high because the claim itself is extraordinary.
This standard is not unique to UFO research. Science demands strong evidence whenever a claim challenges existing understanding. The more remarkable the claim, the stronger the supporting evidence must be.
The Lesson from Recent UAP Investigations
Recent government reviews provide a useful illustration of the difference between uncertainty and proof. Agencies have acknowledged that some reports remain unresolved and that a small number continue to resist immediate explanation. Yet those same investigations have repeatedly reported no verified evidence of extraterrestrial technology, extraterrestrial activity or alien visitation.
