Within Radar Realism
A radar contact often sounds like the strongest possible UFO evidence. Unlike a witness statement, a radar return appears to come from a machine rather than a person. That assumption is one reason radar screens feature so prominently in UFO cinema, including Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Yet the reality is more complicated.

What Primary Radar Can and Cannot Show
Primary radar is often described as a non-cooperative system. It sends out radio pulses and records reflections from whatever lies in the beam’s path. No transponder or active response is required from the target. If enough energy returns to the radar, the system can plot a contact. That sounds straightforward, but the information obtained is narrower than many viewers assume. In ordinary air traffic applications, primary radar is principally used to determine a target’s range and direction from the radar site. Airport surveillance radar, for example, provides range and azimuth but not elevation data. In practical terms, controllers can know where something appears on a horizontal map without necessarily knowing how high it is. - Is the target an aircraft, bird flock, balloon, drone or weather phenomenon?
- Is it one object or several closely spaced objects?
- How large is it?
- Is it manoeuvring intelligently or merely drifting?
- Is the apparent movement caused by the object, atmospheric effects or radar interpretation?
A radar screen can therefore establish that a detection occurred without establishing the nature of what was detected. Aviation authorities developed secondary radar and transponder systems largely because primary radar alone leaves many identification questions unresolved. Why Identity and Altitude Often Remain Uncertain
The most important limitation for UFO claims is that detection is not the same thing as identification.
Modern air traffic systems often rely on secondary surveillance radar, in which an aircraft’s transponder responds to radar interrogations and supplies identifying information and altitude data. When that cooperative response is absent, controllers may be left with only a primary target. A primary contact can indicate that something exists at a particular range and bearing, but it frequently lacks the information needed to classify the object confidently. [Federal Aviation Administration]faa.govFederal Aviation AdministrationRadar Surveillance TerminologyJan 8, 2024 — Non-cooperative Radar (Primary radar) identifies and tracks an… Wikipedia Altitude is a particularly significant issue. A target that appears alarming on a radar display may seem to be converging with an aircraft wh [Wikipedia]WikipediaAirport surveillance radarAirport surveillance radar en its actual vertical position remains uncertain. FAA guidance notes that many radar systems obtain altitude information through transponder reporting rather than through primary radar returns alone. Without that cooperative data, altitude may need to be estimated through other means or remain unknown. Radar coverage itself is also imperfect. Line-of-sight restrictions, terrain, the curvature of the Earth and coverage gaps can affect what a radar sees and how consistently it sees it. A target that appears, disappears or shifts position is not automatically evidence of extraordinary technology; it may reflect the limits of the surveillance environment. This does not mean radar evidence is worthless. On the contrary, radar can strongly support a sighting by showing that an event was not purely subjective. The limitation is that a radar return rarely answers the final question that UFO debates revolve around: what, exactly, was it? How Spielberg Turns That Gap Into Suspense
Spielberg’s genius in the air traffic control sequence of Close Encounters of the Third Kind is that he does not treat radar as a magical truth machine. He uses it as a source of uncertainty.
The controllers have enough information to know that something unusual may be sharing airspace with commercial aircraft. The pilots report visual observations. The radar provides corroboration that there is a target in the vicinity. Yet nobody gains the decisive piece of information that would end the mystery. The scene becomes tense precisely because the professionals involved possess partial evidence rather than complete knowledge. [Flight Safety Detectives]flightsafetydetectives.com2:52.8. This approach is much closer to real aviation than the common cinematic cliché in which a radar operator instantly identifies an unknown object. In reality, controllers often work with incomplete information and must make safety decisions before every ambiguity is resolved. Spielberg transforms that operational reality into drama. The radar contact makes the sighting harder to dismiss, but not easy to explain. The famous exchange in which pilots hesitate to file a UFO report reinforces the same theme. The problem is not a lack of evidence; it is the absence of a category that comfortably fits the available evidence. Radar, radio traffic and eyewitness reports all point toward an unusual event, yet none can conclusively identify its cause. [Flight Safety Detectives]flightsafetydetectives.com2:52.8. The Real Lesson Behind the Radar Blip
A primary radar return can make a UFO sighting more credible because it introduces an independent sensor into the story. However, credibility is not the same thing as proof. Primary radar excels at showing that a reflection occurred at a particular place and time. It is far less effective at revealing the identity, altitude, intent or nature of the object responsible. A radar blip can move asighting beyond pure anecdote, but it rarely closes the case. Instead, it creates the same unresolved space that powers Close Encounters: enough evidence to demand attention, not enough evidence to eliminate doubt.
