When E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial arrived in 1982, it did more than become a blockbuster. It helped change one of the most persistent assumptions in modern science fiction: that an alien visitor was likely to be a threat.

From invasion threat to household intimacy
For much of the twentieth century, popular alien stories were shaped by anxiety. Extraterrestrials often appeared as invaders, monsters or symbols of Cold War fears. Even when aliens were not openly hostile, they were frequently distant, inscrutable or superior beings whose arrival threatened ordinary life. Academic studies of science-fiction cinema note that alien figures were commonly used to represent danger, conflict and the unknown. E.T. reversed that expectation. The central extraterrestrial is stranded, frightened and dependent on human help. Rather than descending from the sky with destructive power, E.T. spends much of the film hiding in closets, sheds and bedrooms. The drama comes not from defeating an alien but from protecting one.
This was a deliberate creative choice. Spielberg developed the film from deeply personal ideas about childhood loneliness and companionship. The story transformed the alien from an external threat into a source of comfort and connection. The Library of Congress film essay describes E.T. as a gentle being whose abilities heal rather than harm, while the narrative positions government authorities—not the alien—as the main source of danger and disruption. The result was a striking reversal of audience expectations. Viewers were encouraged to identify emotionally with the extraterrestrial. The question was no longer “What if aliens attack?” but “What if an alien needs our help?”
The child witness as emotional guide
A crucial part of the film’s influence lies in its perspective. Spielberg tells the story largely through the eyes of Elliott, a child navigating family instability and emotional isolation. Because the audience experiences E.T. through Elliott’s curiosity and compassion, the alien encounter feels intimate rather than frightening. [The Library of Congress]loc.govThe Library of Congressfilm essay for "E.TThe Extra-Terrestrial"May 28, 2015 — tle alien creature, stranded on Earth and desperate to find a way back to… E.T. This choice differed sharply from many earlier science-fiction films, which often centred on scientists, soldiers or government officials. In E.T., adults are initially distant figures. Children become the first interpreters of the extraordinary event.
The relationship between Elliott and E.T. also reframed the UFO-contact narrative. Instead of secret investigations, military responses or scientific analysis, contact becomes a friendship. Spielberg later described the story as a “double rescue,” with the boy and the alien helping one another emotionally. [YouTube]youtube.comSteven Spielberg on E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIALSteven Spielberg talks about the characters of Elliott and E.T., and how he conside…
That emotional structure had important consequences for how audiences imagined extraterrestrials:
- The witness is innocent rather than obsessed.
- Contact is personal rather than geopolitical.
- Communication is based on empathy rather than technology.
- The alien becomes an individual character rather than an anonymous species.
These choices encouraged viewers to think about extraterrestrial life in human terms. The unknown became relatable.
Why kindness changed UFO imagination
The cultural significance of E.T. extends beyond the film itself. By becoming one of the most successful movies ever released, it carried its image of the benevolent alien into mainstream culture on a massive scale. The friendly extraterrestrial became one of the defining icons of the 1980s. This did not create belief in UFOs or extraterrestrial visitation. What it changed was the emotional framework through which many people imagined those possibilities. Spielberg’s alien was curious, gentle and morally sympathetic. The possibility of contact could therefore be imagined as hopeful rather than catastrophic.
The influence can be seen in later science-fiction works that treated extraterrestrials as companions, teachers or misunderstood outsiders rather than invaders. Scholars examining changing media representations of aliens have noted a broader movement away from purely threatening extraterrestrials and toward stories emphasising communication, romance, friendship and coexistence. E.T. became one of the most visible examples of that transition. The film also reinforced a recurring Spielberg theme: communication across difference. Producer Kathleen Kennedy later identified tolerance as a central idea within the story, while Spielberg himself linked the alien-human friendship to the possibility of overcoming barriers between seemingly incompatible groups. Within the wider story of Hollywood’s role in mainstreaming UFO and alien ideas, this may be E.T.’s most lasting contribution. The film did not ask audiences to evaluate evidence for extraterrestrial visitation. Instead, it encouraged them to imagine that if contact occurred, the visitor might be vulnerable, kind and worthy of compassion. That imaginative shift expanded the emotional possibilities surrounding UFO culture and alien life, moving the extraterrestrial figure from the battlefield into the family home.
