The agency’s public position rests on several principles:
- Extraordinary claims require high-quality evidence.
- Most reported UAP events contain insufficient sensor data.
- Scientific conclusions must be reproducible and independently verifiable.

NASA has repeatedly stated that it possesses no data supporting the idea that UAP are alien technology. Yet it has also avoided declaring that every case is solved. Instead, the agency argues that better data collection is needed before stronger conclusions can be reached. For Spielberg’s position, this creates an important challenge. Circumstantial evidence may be persuasive at a personal level, but NASA’s framework requires evidence that can survive systematic scientific scrutiny. Under that standard, belief alone carries little weight.
AARO’s Historical Record Position
AARO’s role is different from NASA’s. The office was created within the Department of Defense to investigate and resolve reports of unidentified anomalous phenomena across air, sea, space and other domains.
Its 2024 historical review examined decades of government investigations and long-running claims about recovered alien craft, reverse-engineering programmes and hidden extraterrestrial technology. The office reported that it found no verifiable evidence that any government investigation, academic review or official panel had confirmed extraterrestrial technology. AARO has maintained this position in subsequent public statements. This places AARO in a position that is more sceptical than Spielberg’s conviction. While Spielberg interprets accumulated testimony and circumstantial information as pointing towards visitation, AARO argues that decades of investigation have not produced evidence capable of establishing that conclusion.
Why Unresolved Does Not Mean Extraterrestrial
One reason the disagreement persists is that many people interpret an unsolved case as indirect evidence for an extraordinary explanation. NASA and AARO reject that reasoning.
An unresolved report simply means investigators lack enough information to identify the object or event with confidence. It does not automatically elevate the probability of an alien explanation. The most revealing contrast between Spielberg and the official investigations is methodological rather than ideological.

That leaves a narrow but important middle ground. Modern UAP investigations have brought unprecedented public attention, government transparency efforts and scientific interest to the subject. In practical terms, Spielberg’s conviction represents a personal interpretation of the available record, while NASA and AARO continue to treat the same record as incomplete. The difference is not whether mysteries exist, but whether those mysteries justify a conclusion that alien visitors are already here.
