Within E T

One of the most important shifts in Steven Spielberg’s UFO storytelling occurs in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). Instead of asking what an alien visitor wants from humanity, the film asks what humanity owes a vulnerable visitor. The alien is not an invader, conqueror or mysterious superior intelligence. He is stranded.

From Invasion Fear to Protection Story

For decades before E.T., popular UFO and alien narratives were often organised around anxiety. Alien visitors were invaders, infiltrators, abductors or mysterious forces whose intentions had to be deciphered. Even sympathetic contact stories frequently focused on proving the reality of the phenomenon or understanding its cosmic significance.

Left Behind Alien Pr E99 Ef 4 illustration 1 Spielberg’s own UFO work had already begun moving away from outright hostility. Close Encounters of the Third Kind presented extraterrestrials as peaceful visitors, but the encounter remained large-scale and centred on discovery, evidence and transcendence. E.T. goes further by shrinking the encounter to a suburban household and reversing the direction of vulnerability. The alien is the endangered party. This reversal changes the audience’s instinctive questions:

  • Not “Can humanity trust the alien?”
  • But “Can the alien trust humanity?”
  • Not “Will the visitor harm us?”
  • But “Can we keep the visitor safe?”
  • Not “How do we prove contact occurred?”
  • But “How do we help someone get home?”

The UFO premise remains intact—an extraterrestrial arrives on Earth—but the emotional mechanism is fundamentally different. Fear is displaced by guardianship.

The Friendly Seed from Night Skies

The softer premise did not emerge fully formed. It evolved from a much darker project.

After Close Encounters, Spielberg developed an unmade film called Night Skies, inspired partly by UFO folklore involving hostile creatures terrorising a rural family. Early versions featured multiple extraterrestrials, most of them threatening. Yet within that horror framework existed one unusual figure: a gentle alien known as “Buddy” (sometimes rendered as “Budde”), who befriended a child while the others acted aggressively. [Turner Classic Movies]tcm.comTurner Classic Movies E.TThe Extra-Terrestrial (1982)Night Skies also featured a friendly alien— "Buddy”— who forms a friendship with a child. And in the last sce…

The crucial detail is how that story ended. In descriptions of the project, the friendly alien was left behind on Earth after the departure of the others. That image—a benevolent extraterrestrial marooned and vulnerable—became the emotional seed from which E.T. grew. Spielberg increasingly found himself drawn not to the alien siege narrative but to the lonely outsider who needed help. [Turner Classic Movies]tcm.comTurner Classic Movies E.TThe Extra-Terrestrial (1982)Night Skies also featured a friendly alien— "Buddy”— who forms a friendship with a child. While working on Raiders of the Lost Ark, Spielberg discussed this sympathetic alien-child relationship with screenwriter Melissa Mathison. The darker UFO thriller gradually gave way to a story built almost entirely around the abandoned visitor and the child who protects him. The hostile aliens disappeared; the stranded friend remained. Seen historically, E.T. is not merely a family-friendly UFO film. It is the result of Spielberg extracting one compassionate element from a horror concept and allowing that element to become the whole story.

Why Responsibility Replaces Proof

The left-behind premise works because it changes the objective of the narrative.

Many UFO stories revolve around verification. Characters seek evidence, government acknowledgement or scientific understanding. In E.T., proof is almost irrelevant. Elliott already knows the alien exists. The audience knows the alien exists. The challenge is not discovery but stewardship.

Responsibility becomes the driving force at every stage:

  • Elliott must hide E.T.
  • The children must feed and protect him.
  • They must help him communicate.
  • They must help him return home. [imdb.com]imdb.comE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)A troubled child summons the courage to help a friendly alien escape from Earth and return to his ho…

Each task creates emotional investment without relying on invasion stakes or conspiracy revelations. The drama emerges from caregiving. The audience worries not about planetary catastrophe but about whether a frightened visitor will survive long enough to leave. [IMDb]imdb.comE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)A troubled child summons the courage to help a friendly alien escape from Earth and return to his ho…

This is a remarkable inversion of traditional UFO logic. In many alien narratives, human beings fear becoming subjects of an alien agenda. In E.T., the alien risks becoming subject to human systems of control. The moral burden therefore falls on the human characters, especially the children.

A Mirror of Being Left Behind

The premise also gains power because the alien’s predicament mirrors Elliott’s emotional state.

Spielberg has repeatedly connected the film to his experience of parental divorce and the loneliness that followed. He described imagining how a child carrying family responsibilities might respond to caring for another vulnerable being. The question became: what happens when a child who feels abandoned encounters someone even more abandoned? The parallel is subtle but central:

  • Elliott feels left behind by his father.
  • E.T. is literally left behind by his own people.
  • Both are separated from home.
  • Both need connection.

Because of this structure, rescuing the alien is never merely a plot requirement. Helping E.T. becomes a way for Elliott to confront his own sense of displacement. Critics and commentators have long noted that the film treats the bond as a mutual rescue rather than a one-sided act of kindness. Spielberg himself later described the story as a “double rescue,” with each character helping save the other. [YouTube]youtube.comSteven Spielberg on E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIALDecember 21, 2011 — Steven Spielberg talks about the characters of Elliott and E.T…Published: December 21, 2011

The left-behind alien therefore functions as more than a science-fiction device. It is a dramatic mechanism that translates emotional loss into a UFO narrative.

The Softer UFO Premise in Spielberg’s Career

Within Spielberg’s UFO-related work, the stranded alien marks a distinctive turning point.

Close Encounters imagines humanity looking upward in wonder. E.T. imagines humanity looking downward in compassion. The first asks whether contact is possible; the second asks how people behave once contact has already happened.

That difference explains why E.T. remains unusual among alien films. Its extraterrestrial visitor is neither a threat nor a saviour. He does not arrive to conquer Earth, deliver cosmic wisdom or transform civilisation. He simply needs help.

By making the alien the one who requires rescue, Spielberg transformed the UFO encounter into a story about empathy. The extraordinary element is not the spacecraft or the visitor from another world. It is the decision to protect someone who is frightened, stranded and far from home. In that sense, the left-behind alien became Spielberg’s gentlest and most enduring answer to the UFO question.
