One of the most important shifts in Steven Spielberg’s UFO storytelling occurs in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). Instead of asking what an alien visitor wants from humanity, the film asks what humanity owes a vulnerable visitor. The alien is not an invader, conqueror or mysterious superior intelligence. He is stranded.

From Invasion Fear to Protection Story
For decades before E.T., popular UFO and alien narratives were often organised around anxiety. Alien visitors were invaders, infiltrators, abductors or mysterious forces whose intentions had to be deciphered. Even sympathetic contact stories frequently focused on proving the reality of the phenomenon or understanding its cosmic significance.
Spielberg’s own UFO work had already begun moving away from outright hostility. Close Encounters of the Third Kind presented extraterrestrials as peaceful visitors, but the encounter remained large-scale and centred on discovery, evidence and transcendence. E.T. goes further by shrinking the encounter to a suburban household and reversing the direction of vulnerability. The alien is the endangered party. This reversal changes the audience’s instinctive questions:
- Not “Can humanity trust the alien?”
- But “Can the alien trust humanity?”

The UFO premise remains intact—an extraterrestrial arrives on Earth—but the emotional mechanism is fundamentally different. Fear is displaced by guardianship.
The Friendly Seed from Night Skies
The softer premise did not emerge fully formed. It evolved from a much darker project.
After Close Encounters, Spielberg developed an unmade film called Night Skies, inspired partly by UFO folklore involving hostile creatures terrorising a rural family. Early versions featured multiple extraterrestrials, most of them threatening. The crucial detail is how that story ended. In descriptions of the project, the friendly alien was left behind on Earth after the departure of the others. This is a remarkable inversion of traditional UFO logic. In many alien narratives, human beings fear becoming subjects of an alien agenda. In E.T., the alien risks becoming subject to human systems of control. The moral burden therefore falls on the human characters, especially the children.

The parallel is subtle but central:

Within Spielberg’s UFO-related work, the stranded alien marks a distinctive turning point.
Close Encounters imagines humanity looking upward in wonder. E.T. imagines humanity looking downward in compassion. The first asks whether contact is possible; the second asks how people behave once contact has already happened.
That difference explains why E.T. remains unusual among alien films. Its extraterrestrial visitor is neither a threat nor a saviour. He does not arrive to conquer Earth, deliver cosmic wisdom or transform civilisation. He simply needs help.
By making the alien the one who requires rescue, Spielberg transformed the UFO encounter into a story about empathy. The extraordinary element is not the spacecraft or the visitor from another world.
